Congratulations to Greg Martin and Robert Martin of Walker & Martin Ranch Sales for their sale this week of Cross 5 Ranch in eastern New Mexico. The sale occurred on August 22, 2017, and was submitted through the Lands of America Comparable Sales program.
The ranch comprises 2,227 acres on the edge of the Pecos River and Santa Rosa Lake State Park, including 1.5 miles of river just below the reservoir dam. Large mule deer traverse through the ranch on their way to the protected enclaves of the adjoining park, along with flocks of wild turkey who like to roost in the cottonwoods along the riverbanks. Both the river and the lake offer excellent fishing for bass and catfish.
Sitting on the plains of the eastern part of the state, this region’s shortgrass prairie is dotted with working ranches and the imprint of 19th-century Santa Fe Trail pioneers. Cross 5 Ranch’s blue grama rangeland is in excellent condition and supports a livestock operation equipped with two wells, two storage tanks and multiple drinkers throughout the ranch.
State Route 91 traverses the ranch by way of paved access across the Santa Rosa dam, making for easy ingress and egress. Further, the ranch is less than ten miles from I-40 and the village of Santa Rosa, a stop along the original Route 66 as well as home to the Blue Hole, an 81-foot-deep natural spring that allows for year-round scuba diving.
