Although the state’s largest county—at 3.5 million acres, it’s slightly bigger than Connecticut—two-thirds of Beaverhead County comprise public lands including Beaverhead Deer-Lodge National Forest, Red Rocks Lakes National Wildlife Refuge and other Bureau of Land Management and State lands. The county is framed by the 10,000-foot peaks of the Continental Divide as the range sweeps northwest toward Glacier National Park.

Stone Creek Dry Farm sits close to Dillon, Montana, in a scenic valley into which the Ruby, Big Hole and Beaverhead rivers drain. These rivers form the headwaters of the Missouri River. Beaverhead River is a blue-ribbon trout stream that lures expert fly-fishers from around the world.

This well-watered mountain ranch offers good pasture and grazing land in one of the state’s most productive agricultural regions. According to 2012 USDA figures, the county’s cattle population density—27.6 per square mile—was the highest in Montana. Cattle and hay are the county’s largest ag products.

With excellent access to abundant recreational opportunities, the county seat of Dillon is a popular spot for visitors to the state as well as those passing through to experience nearby Yellowstone National Park. The site of Montana’s 1860s Gold Rush, Dillon recalls the West’s frontier-era days as well as its cowboy heritage through today’s cattle and ranching backdrop.
