Baca County is a rural, agricultural region in southeastern Colorado that includes a short section of the historic Santa Fe Trail's Cimarron Route. More recently, the county was among the hardest hit during the 1930s "Dust Bowl," an event that precipitated a push by the Federal Government to purchase areas of cultivated land for soil conservation and subsequent rehabilitation to native grassland. Today,?the U.S. Forest Service supervises 220,000 acres of this land purchased in the 1930s, labeled the Cimarron National Grasslands, in both Baca County and neighboring Las Animas County. A similar area, the 520-square-mile Cimarron National Grassland, sits in adjacent Morton County, Kansas.
