A number of historic cattle ranches dot the county, which includes cattle ranching along with oil and agriculture as its chief economic drivers. Although the productivity of oil fields here has slowed in recent decades, Foard County has produced over 20 million barrels of crude since the first field was drilled in the 1920s. Set to the east of the Panhandle on the drier end of the Texas Plains, Crowell is the county seat.
