A number of historic cattle ranches dot the county, which includes cattle ranching along with oil and agriculture as its chief economic drivers. Although the productivity of oil fields here has slowed in recent decades, Foard County has produced over 20 million barrels of crude since the first field was drilled in the 1920s. Set to the east of the Panhandle on the drier end of the Texas Plains, Crowell is the county seat. A total of 6,000 acres were listed for sale in Foard County recently; the combined value of all Foard County land for sale was approximately $16 million. Foard County ranks 224th out of 254 counties in the Lone Star State for the combined amount of land currently advertised for sale. Of all farms, ranches, and rural real estate for sale in Foard County, Crowell had the most land for sale. Agriculture and farming drives the Foard County economy, with 194 farms recorded in the county during the U.S. Census in 2012. Farming activities in Foard County generate annual revenues of $4 million, the majority of which comes from livestock products. Foard County is the 221st largest county (707 square miles) in Texas. It's located in the North Central Plains Texas region of the state.
