About Kalawao County, HI
By the numbers, Kalawao County is the smallest U.S. county both by population and land area. Occupying the Kalaupapa Peninsula on the island of Moloka?i, the region is remote and largely inaccessible, separated from the rest of the island by quarter-mile sea cliffs. The only land access is by mule trail. Kalawao was also home to one of two leper colonies established on Moloka?i during the late 1800s and early 20th century. Kalaupapa National Historical Park was established in 1980 to mark this aspect of Hawaiian cultural history. Kalawao County ranks fifth based on the combined acreage of land for sale among all the counties in the Rainbow State. Among cities in Kalawao County with farms, rural land, hunting land and other land for sale, Pahoa featured the most land for sale. Kalawao County is one of the ten largest counties in Hawaii (52 square miles). It's located in the Maui Lanai Hawaii region of Hawaii.
