The Solano County town of Dixon was established during California's mid-19th-century Gold Rush and later became home to a number of large dairy farms supplying milk and other dairy products to nearby San Francisco during the 1900s. In order to feed the valley's large dairy herds, fields in Solano and adjacent Yolo counties were put to use growing alfalfa and other cattle feed. Today, agriculture continues to drive a significant percentage of Solano County's economy, with major crops including walnuts, alfalfa and hay, cattle, and nursery products. Unsurprisingly given the county's location close to Napa and Sonoma, wine grapes are also becoming increasingly important to the local economy, as are connected businesses in wine production, storage and distribution. A total of approximately 3,000 acres were listed for sale in Solano County recently; the combined value of all Solano County land for sale was approximately $143 million. Solano County ranks 46th out of 58 counties in the state for the combined amount of land currently advertised for sale. Among cities in Solano County with farms and ranches for sale, Vacaville featured the most land for sale. Solano County is the 47th largest county (906 square miles) in California.
