Located in western North Carolina along the South Carolina line, the scenic mountainous region of Transylvania County bills itself the "Land of Waterfalls." Among the 250 cascades here, 411-foot Whitewater Falls is the one of the highest waterfalls in the eastern United States. Over half the county comprises state or federal land, with Pisgah National Forest, Gorges State Park and DuPont State Forest offering activities such as hiking, biking, camping, canoeing, tubing and fishing for locals and visitors alike. The county seat is Brevard. A combined almost 4,000 acres were listed for sale in Transylvania County recently; the value of all Transylvania County land for sale was almost $332 million. Transylvania County ranks 23rd in the Tar Heel State for the combined amount of land currently advertised for sale. Brevard had the most land for sale. Based on its natural assets, Transylvania County's economy is dependent on tourism and recreation. Transylvania County is North Carolina's 72nd largest county (380 square miles).
