Comprising both the borough and city of Yakutat along Alaska's Inside Passage, this coastal area is so-named for the Tlingit translation for "the place where canoes rest." At over 9,400 square miles, Yakutat Borough is about six times bigger than Rhode Island and features among the 50 largest counties in the U.S. Its geography features the mountains and forested slopes of public lands like Chugach National Forest, Glacier Bay National Park and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve as they spill toward the Gulf of Alaska.
