The La Cueva Farm, which was originally called the La Cueva Ranch, is rich in history. Founded in 1851 by Vicente Romero, the La Cueva Ranch was a part of the legendary Mora Land Grant. Romero was a local sheepherder who married one of the descendants of the Mora Land Grant. During the 1860s he would go on to build the 8,000 square foot hacienda for his family to live in. During this time Romero also built the grist mill, mercantile store, and multiple warehouses. The Mora River powered the grist mill and served to irrigate the nearby fields through acequias (irrigation ditches).

The ranch remained in the Romero family until 1944 when a portion of it was sold to Colonel William Salman who would go on to develop the raspberry fields that are still well known today.

Today the Abell family owns the La Cueva Farm and continues to uphold many of the traditions that have accompanied this historic location for centuries

The Hacienda is an elaborate 2 story adobe home that dates to the 1860s. The hacienda has been well maintained and is in good condition. It offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of New Mexico history.

Currently there are 7.4 +/- acres used to cultivate all organic raspberries, while the remaining irrigated land has historically been used for alfalfa and native grass production.

For many decades the gristmill served as an essential part of the community. The mill was the main source of wheat and flour for the military post of Fort Union and continued to grind wheat and create electricity until the 20th century.

The Old Mill Cafe is currently opened and serves sandwiches, barbecue, and raspberry sundaes fresh from the farm during raspberry season. The cafe is complete with a commercial kitchen, smokehouse and walk in cooler.

In recent years the five greenhouses have been used as a nursery which specializes in plants and flowers that thrive in northern New Mexico.
