THE OLD HOMESTEAD AT GILMORE LANDING

The Gilmore Landing home was built sometime in the late 1800s or the very early 1900s. In 1934, the current owners grandfather, J.W Gilmore and his wife Julia, purchased the home and land as a retreat for their ever-growing family. The Gilmores owned a grocery store in Beckley and raised produce on the rich bottomland to sell in their store. The fertile land produced an abundance of potatoes, tomatoes, green peppers, corn and rhubarb.

The homes siding is shiplap poplar and the interior walls and ceilings are tight-grained tongue and grove pine. The flooring is heart pine or oak and the roof is galvanized tin.

The original spring near the home provided water early on before the well was drilled in the late 1950s. The spring has stacked cut-stone surrounding it and is still producing water.
