Description

This 389 acre timber tract is located in the heart of the Redwood Coastal Range, 15 miles west of Ukiah, along the South Fork Big River drainage, near the 2,743 acre Montgomery Woods State Reserve maintained by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Purchases and donations by Save the Redwoods League have helped expand the Reserve, including a recent gift of lands to the Bureau of Land Management that adjoin the Dark Gulch Auction Property.

The property has access from Orr Springs Road, via a railroad bridge across South Fork Big River, to an easement over BLM ownership into the northeast corner of the parcel. There is an estimated 4,157 MBF of net conifer volume, with 79% redwood and the balance primarily Douglasfir. 74% of this volume, or 3,088 MBF, is 16 inch DBH or larger, and is not impacted by watercourse buffers or harvest reserves. There is a Timber Harvest Plan with expiration date of 2015 (THP 110131MEN) available in the Supplemental Information Package, to be assigned to the new owner. The Seller has not undertaken any harvest activities since its acquisition in 1998. There are primarily northfacing slopes, with moderate to steep topography, and a system of internal logging spur roads that will need some improvement prior to harvest activities.

There is a small amount of South Fork Big River frontage in the northeast section of the parcel, just east of Dark Gulch. The 160 acre Hoe Road Tract (Auction Property #140) is located 2.8 miles west at Hoe Road. (Please see directions).

From Ukiah, at the intersection of North State Street and Orr Springs Road, proceed west on Orr Springs Road for 13.9 miles to the railroad bridge crossing along the South Fork Big River. Vehicles should park along Orr Springs Road and access is walkin, only.
