Elk Ridge Ranch

Location: SE of Raton, NE of Springer, South of Capulin, West of Clayton

Elk Ridge Ranch is 5,523.2 deeded acres which is entirely private with no state or federal leased land and no public road going through the property. A 560 acre tract is .75 mile south of the 4,963.2 acres and accessed by deeded easement. The ranch is located in the eastern part of historic Colfax County. The Santa Fe Trail (Cimmaron cutoff) passed just 2 miles or so south of the ranch.

The ranch lies southeast of Palo Blanco Mountain between the Chico Hills and Barela Mountain. Palo Blanco Creek and Armijo Creek traverse the ranch from the northwest to the southeast creating excellent wildlife habitat for Elk and Mule Deer with the rolling grasslands of the ranch being home for Pronghorn Antelope herds.

WILDLIFE AND HUNTING

The ranch has been receiving 6 Elk permits per year and boasts a herd of approximately 100 head according to the owner. Complementing the Elk hunting is mule deer, pronghorn antelope, turkey, quail and other wildlife.

RANCH WATER RESOURCES

The ranch has an abundant water supply. 3 total wells including: 1 well with submersible electric motor and pump on utility power, 2 windmills, 12 dirt tanks, Palo Blanco and Armijo creeks and 2 springs as per USGS.

TERRAIN, GRASSES, CATTLE GRAZING, ELEVATION

The ranch consisting of 5,523.2 +/- deeded acres is located in the reputation grazing country of Northeastern New Mexico. Diverse topography and excellent grass provide for a better than average ranch for the area. Grama grass is the dominant vegetation on the ranch with few invasive species. Elevations range from 6,400 to 6,855 feet. The ranch consists mainly of rolling grassland broken by the streams traversing the ranch.

FENCING AND ROADS

Fencing on the ranch is good to excellent with considerable new fencing. Access to the ranch is via county road and a road runs all the way through the ranch providing good access throughout the ranch.

HEADQUARTERS HOME and BARN

The Headquarters of the ranch includes a solid rock house, a metal barn and a very good set of pens. Dozens of cottonwood trees surround the headquarters which also has a nice orchard of fruit trees. The ranch contains several old home and other building ruins.

PENS AND BARNS

Located at the HQ are good pens, loading chute, horse stalls and feed storage bins.
