The peak rises 600 feet above the surrounding terrain and is unique in that its summit is mostly devoid of vegetation. Its as close to an alpine environment as you can get in Michigan. A mile and a half further to the east is well known Sugarloaf Mountain Natural Area which consists of a 3,200 foot trail of pathway and stairway segments that lead to the mountain's summit 470 feet above Lake Superior. Viewing platforms on the mountain's summit provide a spectacular view of the rugged coastline and surrounding forestlands for miles. Sections of the woods roads near the cabin have been in use for many years for outdoor recreation. Awesome Summer running/skiing/mountain biking trail systems, and fine Winter Cross Country ski trails are being developed every year. Snowmobile Trail 310 runs past the cabin's entrance driveway! Sections of the Noquemanon Trail Network (designed for non-motorized recreational use) is a quarter mile away, and the Trail Head is about two miles away. Also near by is a segment of the North Country Trail. The North Country Trail, when completed, will connect seven states and 4600 miles, from New York to North Dakota - and will be the longest hiking trail in the United States.
